Dolac Market

Dolac () is a farmers' market located in Gornji Grad - Medveščak city district of Zagreb, Croatia. Dolac is the most visited and the best known farmer's market in Zagreb, well known for its combination of traditional open market with stalls and a sheltered market below. It is located only a few dozen meters away from the main city square, Ban Jelačić Square, between the oldest parts of Zagreb, Gradec and Kaptol. The Dolac market Zagreb is centrally located right behind the town’s main square. It’s Zagreb‘s main farmers’ market. We enjoy Dolac farmers’ market for all the right reasons: a fresh, and local produce, aromas, voices and atmosphere that you can only experience on a local market. It reflects local’s daily life. We can spend hours just walking around.
The daily market, on a raised square a set of stairs up from Jelačić, has been the city’s major trading place since 1926. Farmers from surrounding villages come to sell their home-made foodstuffs and some of the freshest fruit and vegetables you’ll ever taste. In the covered market downstairs are butchers, fishmongers and old ladies selling the local speciality sir i vrhnje (cheese and cream). Flowers and lace are also widely available. Alongside, the renovated fish market, ribarnica, sells fresh produce every day but Monday.
Croatia's raw ingredients are exceptional in quality. In the Roman empire, Croatia was second only to Italy in importance of olive oil and wine production. The fertile Istrian peninsula produces high quality olive oil (as good as anything we tried in Italy) and sheep's cheese. The Dalmatian coast is justifiably world-renowned for its plump sweet figs. The cauliflower we purchased in Zagreb was sweeter and tastier than any cauliflower we've tried before (so says Patrick, who generally finds cauliflower bland and insipid). We picked oyster mushrooms by the pound for only $2.00 USD, and marvelled at the texture and flavor of these hearty mushrooms. Kiwi fruits were sweet and slightly tart and brussel sprouts crunched when roasted. Truffle products abound and fish and meats are fresh and cut thickly.
